Green Roots
Inspired by the rise of Green movements in Europe and Africa, progressive
activists
began
to form
the U.S.
Green
political
movement in the early 1980s. Over the following
two decades, Green parties took root across the United
States, with the first Green Party candidate appearing on the
ballot in 1986.
Green Party growth has been rapid. The Colorado state party membership
has more than doubled since 1996. The 2000 Nader/LaDuke presidential
campaign received almost three million votes. From 2001 to 2003,
the number of affiliated state parties has increased from 29 to 41,
and Green party membership has increased to over 300,000. In the
2002 elections, votes for Green party candidates nearly doubled to
almost six million.
